Acid attack on college student in Motihari; accused arrested MOTIHARI, BIHAR — January 27, 2026

A college student was injured in an acid attack at her residence in the Patahi police station area of Motihari in East Champaran district, police said, after which the accused was taken into custody. The incident occurred late at night when the woman was sleeping at home, according to multiple news reports.

Police sources stated that the woman, who is pursuing a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree, was asleep with her mother when a man entered the house and threw acid at her face before fleeing. She sustained severe burn injuries and was taken to a private hospital in Motihari, where her condition was described as serious and under treatment.

According to the preliminary investigation, the accused, identified as Priyanshu Kumar, is the victim’s distant relative. Police said he had developed romantic feelings for the woman and had sent repeated messages to her, but she did not respond. After she blocked his mobile number, the accused allegedly attacked her at night.

Officials visited the hospital after being informed by medical staff and recorded the victim’s statement.

DSP Kumar Chandan was quoted by local media saying, “On the basis of the victim’s statement, an FIR has been registered against the accused Priyanshu and he has been arrested. This is an extremely serious crime and police are investigating all aspects of the case.”

Local police also indicated that Priyanshu is still being questioned and that evidence from the scene is being collected as part of the ongoing investigation.

Under Section 326A of the Indian Penal Code, causing grievous hurt by throwing acid is an offence punishable with a minimum of 10 years’ imprisonment, which may extend to life imprisonment, and a fine. The fine is meant to help cover the victim’s medical expenses.

Section 326B deals with attempted acid attacks, prescribing 5 to 7 years’ imprisonment and fine for attempts to throw acid with intent to cause harm.

In addition to criminal penalties, courts in India have in some cases ordered state compensation for survivors. For instance, a Kerala High Court upheld convictions and directed ₹3 lakh compensation for acid attack victims in a 2025 judgment, underscoring judicial support for rehabilitation.

Acid attacks continue to be reported across India. Authorities and legal experts note that beyond prosecuting perpetrators, enforcement of safety measures, regulation of acid sales, and support for survivors through timely compensation and medical care are important components of the overall response to such crimes.
